You're absolutely right, books are great resources, but only when they're used. However, these books are of no use if not opened and read so the contents can be put into practice. I am also an advocate of using peer reviews and having an editor go over your work. There's no substitute for working in a newsroom and having an editor set you straight when you make an error. This is what sticks with you.
